Our Story
We are Shams Hazim and Iris Bekkers, the founders of Babel. We both are passionate about design that helps to revive our ecosystems and promotes biodiversity. Our belief is that the city of the future is one where we flourish and collaborate with nature.
Our focus is on insects and other often overseen small organisms that are indigenous to the Netherlands and surroundings. Together with experts we create objects to realize nature-inclusive cities, like the Babel tower that provides a habitat for small urban dwellers like insects.

The Tower of Babel
Extreme weather conditions, such as intense rainfall and prolonged droughts, have negative effects on many animal species. In particular, insects are expected to be heavily impacted by the consequences of our current climate crisis. This is a concerning development, as insects are an essential part of our ecosystem.
Studio Babel has developed a shelter that provides insects with a refuge during times of extreme weather conditions.
The tower collects rainwater and redistributes it during periods of drought to the plants growing around the tower. These plants are crucial for creating a healthy environment for our little friends, providing them with food, water, and shelter.
The shelter takes the form of a 3D-printed clay tower. Babel utilizes ecological data in close collaboration with ecologists and other disciplines to understand and address the needs of diverse insects. This ensures that each Babel is unique and adapts to the environment and its (non-human) inhabitants.
